Heroic Captures – December 2017 – Season 2

Greetings Heroes, and happy holidays! Thank you all so much for your participation this season. We had upwards of 50 photographers submit for Heroic Captures and as always, all of the submissions we received were phenomenal. From long exposure light trails to underwater shots to expert photo manipulation and selective coloring, we’re honored to be able to showcase all of your incredible work.

Congratulations to Mr. Topher Oriel (@topheroriel), who received Heroic Capture awards for all five of his submissions this season, as well as our S1 judges Alive Alf (@alive_alf) and Sarah Sugarman (@sorairo_days), who received 3 – 4 awards each, and whose work we’re so excited to finally be able to count among our Heroic Captures.

Thanks as well to our amazing judges Shila Vikstrom (@vikstroem.photo), James Rulison (@jrulison), and Mariah Mallad (@mariahmallad) for lending their time and expertise to the curation process.

Heroic Captures – September 2017 – Season 1

Greetings Heroes!

First off, I wanted to say thank you to everyone who participated in our first round of Heroic Capture awards. I was overwhelmed with the incredible amount and quality of the submissions we received, as well the sheer geographic reach of all our Heroes, with entries coming in from everywhere from Sweden to Malaysia!

Our curators have officially turned in their votes and I am pleased to honor our very first set of Heroic Photographers! Thanks again to Alf, Stella, and Sarah for taking the time to lend their vision and expertise to the judging process. In order to keep entries anonymous, I drew up a spreadsheet and randomized each photo’s file name into a number. These images were then sent to the judges, who were asked to pick out their favorites and rank them from highest to lowest. Based on this ranking, each image was then assigned points, and those with the most points won the Heroic Capture awards! Next round we will be fine tuning our judging system even more by giving the judges a specific rubric based on innovation, technical skill, and overall appeal.

When I first started Heroic, my goal was twofold — one, to find a way for cosplayers and photographers to connect all around the world, and two, to create a platform to honor some of the amazing work the cosplay photographer community is creating. Over the past few years, the scene has changed dramatically, and cosplay photography is becoming recognized as a legitimate art form. And I hope as we move forward, the creativity just continues to grow.

Things will be slowing down a little bit for Heroic over the next few months, with the next season kicking off around October after the SoCal Fall cons (Stan Lee’s LA Comic Con, Blizzcon, PMX, etc.) have ended. In the meantime, it’s back to the drawing board, creating new photo challenges, finding new curators, planning instructional blog posts and featured photo tutorials, etc.! I want this community to grow and hopefully become a resource for budding cosplayers and cosplay photographers to learn and connect with each other in a way that hasn’t been done before. Got any suggestions for content you’d like to see? Please leave a comment or feel free to email me at heroesofphotography@gmail.com, I’d love to hear from you!

Thanks again, and ’til next time, #beheroic #stayheroic — @justinelement
